The main attraction of this\u00a0 cute\u00a0 netbook is its\u00a0 light weight and a built in HDMI port. We plan to use them extensively for\u00a0\u00a0 content delivery in class rooms. These\u00a0 machines are really cheap, costing around Rs17000 ( around $260).\u00a0 The base model comes with Intel\u00ae Celeron\u00ae Dual-Core ~ 2.58 GHz Processor and 2GB ram, DOS operating system. It has an 11.6 inch LED display.<\/p>\n<p>Our idea was to put \u00a0 ubuntu 14.04 and deploy the machines. The machine has an ethernet port and wifi port.\u00a0 Installation of Ubuntu 15.10 was a smooth affair.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the broadcom wifi interface did\u00a0 not work out of the box. Here is what I did to fix the issue.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Find out which wifi chip is used.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>$lspci <a href=\"http:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-763\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-763\" src=\"http:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1-300x79.png\" alt=\"broadcom wifi lspci\" width=\"300\" height=\"79\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1-300x79.png 300w, https:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1-768x203.png 768w, https:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1-1024x271.png 1024w, https:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1.png 1128w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The wifi chip is\u00a0 Broadcom Corporation BCM43142. You have to download and compile the kernel module for this chip.<\/p>\n<p>2) Make sure that the machine is connected to internet and the apt sources are properly set up<\/p>\n<p>3) Update\u00a0 the machine<\/p>\n<p>$ sudo apt-get update<\/p>\n<p>4) Finally instal the\u00a0 bcmwl driver.<\/p>\n<p>$ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` dkms build-essential bcmwl-kernel-source<\/p>\n<p>This will downlad necessary driver\u00a0 your wifi will be up and running. The above line installs <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dynamic_Kernel_Module_Support\">dynamic kernel module support<\/a>\u00a0 and compiles the broadcom wireless driver.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We resently bought several Asus X200 series netbooks for our faculty members.
