These machines\u00a0 are manufactured by\u00a0 two companies\u00a0 owned by the defense department.\u00a0 I had the opportunity to get hands on training in operating the machine as a part of pre election training for polling officials.( I am going to work as a presiding officer in\u00a0 a\u00a0 polling booth in the first phase of elections.)<\/p>\n<p>The electronic voting machines that we use, have two parts :- a control unit and a balloting unit. They are interconnected by a flat ribbon cable of 5m length.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/evm1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-top-width: 0px; border-left-width: 0px; border-bottom-width: 0px; margin: 0px 0px 0px 100px; border-right-width: 0px\" title=\"evm1\" src=\"http:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/evm1-thumb.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"evm1\" width=\"244\" height=\"149\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Indian Electronic Voting machine<\/p>\n<p>The balloting unit enables the voters to cast their votes. It is connected to the control unit via a connector on the rear. He can press\u00a0 the candidate button shown against\u00a0 his candidate. As soon as the\u00a0\u00a0 button press is received the unit produces a long beep sound and the candidate lamp glows.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0 control unit is organized\u00a0\u00a0 as shown below.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/evm-control1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"border-right: 0px; border-top: 0px; margin: 0px; border-left: 0px; border-bottom: 0px\" title=\"evm_control\" src=\"http:\/\/brainstorms.in\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/04\/evm-control-thumb1.gif\" border=\"0\" alt=\"evm_control\" width=\"469\" height=\"359\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The control unit\u00a0 has several functions. These are performed at different points of election process. It is powered by\u00a0 a\u00a0 6V rugged battery.\u00a0 The battery and\u00a0 candidate set switch are sealed before delivery to the polling station. The polling officials are not supposed to open this section. The candidate\u00a0 set button can be used to set the number of candidates on the balloting unit. The ballot section on the bottom of the control unit is used\u00a0 along with the balloting unit. As soon as a voter is identified, the officer in charge of the control unit presses the ballot button. The busy lamp on the top of the control unit glows\u00a0 along with the ready lamp on the balloting unit. Before the start of actual\u00a0 poll, a mock poll will be conducted.\u00a0 This is to ensure that EVM is not having any preset votes and to make sure that\u00a0\u00a0 the machine works as advertised.\u00a0 The result section will be sealed and signatures of\u00a0 polling agents and presiding officer\u00a0 will be affixed on the seal.at this time\u00a0 At the end of the polls the close button is pressed. The machine is sealed again and\u00a0 put into a box and returned to a counting center.<\/p>\n<p>Update April 17 : I had my election duty at Keezhpaloor , near Meenagal in Aryanadu.
