I think he has made at least 20 phone calls for same. This morning he brought his Compaq laptop to my home and asked me to fix it. I had no other choice left.<br \/>\nI made a google search and found that Option does not officially support Linux. But they gave me a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pharscape.org\/content\/view\/29\/\">link<\/a><br \/>\nwhich  gave a general outline.<br \/>\nThe actual driver for this GPRS modem is at<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/comgt\"> http:\/\/sourceforge.net\/projects\/comgt<\/a><br \/>\n(Later on I found out I can apt it as  apt- get install gcom)<br \/>\nThe man page of comgt\/gcom is very informative.<br \/>\nI inserted the card. It was recognized as a modem at ttyS2<\/p>\n<p>pccard: PCMCIA card inserted into slot 0<br \/>\npcmcia: registering new device pcmcia0.0<br \/>\n0.0: ttyS2 at I\/O 0\u00d73e8 (irq = 3) is a 16550A<\/p>\n<p>I made a link  to \/dev\/modem<\/p>\n<p>#ln \/dev\/ttyS2 \/dev\/modem<\/p>\n<p>Then installed wvdial and ran wvdialconf, which created a basic wvdial.conf in \/etc\/<br \/>\n# apt-get install wvdial<\/p>\n<p>I tweaked \/etc\/wvdial.conf  as below<\/p>\n<p>[Dialer Defaults]<br \/>\nInit1 = ATZ<br \/>\nInit2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &amp;C1 &amp;D2 +FCLASS=0<br \/>\nInit3 = AT+CGDCONT=1,\u201dIP\u201d,\u201dgprssouth.cellone.in\u201d<br \/>\nModem = \/dev\/modem<br \/>\nPhone = *99***1#<br \/>\nIdle Seconds = 3000<br \/>\nPassword = dummy<br \/>\nModem Type = Analog Modem<br \/>\nStupid Mode = 1<br \/>\nCompuserve = 0<br \/>\nBaud = 115200<br \/>\nAuto DNS = 1<br \/>\nDial Command = ATD<br \/>\nAsk Password = 0<br \/>\nISDN = 0<br \/>\nUsername = dummy<\/p>\n<p>\u201cgprssouth.cellone.in \u201d is the APN, which you have to obtain from  your service provider.<br \/>\nThen I did<br \/>\n# gcom -d \/dev\/ttyS2<\/p>\n<p>SIM ready<br \/>\nWaiting for Registration..(120 sec max)<br \/>\nRegistered on Home network: \u201cCellOne\u201d<br \/>\nSignal Quality: 15,99<\/p>\n<p>This registered the SIM to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bsnl.co.in\/\">BSNL<\/a> ( local provider) network<\/p>\n<p>I tried to dial into the BSNL network<\/p>\n<p>#wvdial<br \/>\nThe modem connected to the Internet and I  could browse.<br \/>\nBut after 2 minutes the connection dropped suddenly. This happened several times. I examined the log and found this error message<\/p>\n<p>The PPP daemon has died: Lack of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oreilly.com\/catalog\/linag\/excerpt\/ch08-08.htm\">LCP echo<\/a> responses (exit code = 15)<br \/>\n\u2013&gt; man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.<\/p>\n<p>It seems the gprs modem is handling the LCP request properly.
