Assignment for basic electronics lab This assignment is to familiarize students with common components used in electronic equipment. Each student is assigned the topic indicated against their class number. You have to write a small write up based on the indicated topics. Each assignment should be accompanied by a few pieces of the item. You can look for the items in old toys, dead radios TV's or other faulty equipment. You can also buy the component. If you buy it, the details of purchase such as the shop from which you purchased , date of purchase and the cost of the item should be indicated on the assignment. ( If the value is more than Rs 50/- you need not produce the actual item, but the local source from where you can buy the item must be indicated.). You are encouraged to find out the items from dead equipments and junk items. The write up must have the following points a) Specifications ( Attach a copy of a typical specification if available) b) Operating principles c) Packaging information such as markings color codes etc if any d) Details of manufacturers e) Where did you find the items f) Have you submitted the actual component( if not the reason) g) Picture of the item if possible. f) Cost of the item g) References.( If you found the information on Internet , the complete web address should be given) Some hints about where to look for the items is also given against each item. 1 PNP transistor (minimum 2 types) 2 NPN transistor (minimum 2 types) 3 FET 4 LED ( RED blue and yellow must be submitted) 5 LCD ( Look for dead calculators , watches etc) 6 7 segment displays 7 Varistor 8 Thermistor ( look in old telephones 9 LDR 10 Diodes-rectifier , switching 11 Relay 12 Crystal oscillator 13 ceramic resonator ( look in dead telephones) 14 555 IC 15 electrolytic capacitor 16 Tantalum capacitor (Look for Dead computer parts) 17 carbon film resistor 18 ceramic capacitor 19 wire wound resistor 20 trim-pots and trimmers 21 potentiometer 22 various sockets for electronic components 23 Transformers ( detailed specs and design details and disassembly needed) 24 fuse and fuse holders 25 Mosfets 26 toroids 27 Inductors 28 zener diodes 29 variable capacitor 30 trimmer capacitors 31 Dry cells ( different types , battery holders etc needed) 32 Lead acid batteries and SMF batteries ( Need not produce the items) 33 nickel cadmium batteries 34 nimh batteries 35 Loud speakers and headphones 36 switches -Common type of switches used in electronic equipments 37 IFTs ( Look in old cord less phones , radios etc) 38 piezo buzzers 39 Copper clad sheets and PCBs 40 SCR 41 Triac 42 Heat sinks 43 Solder, fluxes and soldering techniques 44 ferrite and baluns 45 common types of wires and cables used in electronics 46 DB connectors- 9 pin and 25 pin 47 TRS connectors 48 Condenser microphone 49 RCA connector 50 F connector,BNC connector and N connector 51 Common screws used in electronic equipment 52 Vacuum Tubes- Triodes ( look for old valve radios, don't try to disassemble it if the equipment is working.) 53 Vacuum Tubes -Pentodes( ) 54 stepper motor 55 Surface mount resistors 56 Coaxial cable 57 Opto coupler( Look in old phones) 58 Infra red LEDS and detectors ( look in old remote controls) 59 3 pin voltage regulators 60 Ammeters and voltmeters ( Try to get a cheap meter) Write your assignment and submit along with the componet you found out on or before _____. Help for doing this assignment will be available only via email. If you have any doubt regarding your assignment you can mail your questions to------------. You are also encouraged to submit the draft of your assignment to the above address. I will try to review the draft and getback to you for further details. The assignment should be in PDF format. Each assignment will be valued individually and marks will be dependent on how much effort you put into this. Also try to learn what others are working on. You final examination will have questions from all the above topics.
