Faded Dream : A poem by OM VU2JN

This evening I had an eyeball with OM VU2JN, Prof. R Jayaraman. He has given me several of his articles published in 1970s and kindly permitted me to put them on Internet. Among them, this unpublished poem on ham radio attracted me the most.

  2. I also wanted to be a HAM in my childhood days. My favorite magazines were EFY and EFE. I didnt have any electronics knowledge, but I used to read those with excitement. I also wanted to be a HAM. But I couldn’t find any mentors and had troubles with studies at school.

But then came the computer. I forced my dad to get me a computer, started playing with it. Good old days of DOS. Then it grew to windows, ppp dialing, internet. And I could find many peers. Most of my friends in schools were hardcore techies. We are the computer and internet generation.

Maybe this is how things are. Internet give almost everything that HAM gives and that too very easily. Thats what technology does. It democratizes the medium. And I am in total support for it.

  3. hi Kenney,
I also had the same route. Tinkered with radio, went to tech school, read all kinds of electronics mags. And Then one fine morning they bought few computers to my college. That was in 1988. I got hooked and went on to become a geek. Then came internet and free software. But at some point of time I got fed up with internet. Then, I wrote my ham exam when I was 35.
I agree with you point on internet as a medium. But, I feel internet is like a big bazzar and the high end tech hobbies are elite clubs.
With the advent of technology , there are lot of things a tech savvy radio amateur can do. You should be a geek and an eccentric (like me:D).

  4. Hi Jayaram:

Good poem. My elder daughter passed ASOC Grade II back in 2000/2002 there in Bangalore. She was a member of NIAR Bangalore, and the exam was conducted by that organization. She has not received the license so far! And as such, my dream of making her a ham still remailns a DREAM! She got married, and she has a daughter around one year old.
